DEPTH – The appearance of the stone. Many factors can affect the overall quality of a stone. First, is its color. Granted, color does not affect performance, but one would be surprised at how a common material like Santa Cecelia granite may vary from one lot to another. Each type of stone has a reference standard, by which all other materials are compared. The best materials are the closest to the standard for that stone type. In addition, the finish is an important factor. How good is the polish? Better stones, come from better processing plants, who in turn use better equipment. The better equipment gives a better polish. Also, stones finished on the best equipment tend to have much tighter tolerances of thickness throughout the slab. Why is this important? Because a flatter stone (and we are talking measurements of 1/4” or less) will provide a tighter and flatter seam. Furthermore, many of the best materials have a resin finish applied to the surface. The resin finish fills in any pits, pores, or imperfections, providing a surface almost impervious to any damage or stainable materials.
Important note: a quality supplier/fabricator should be able to tell you about every characteristic of their stone and its origin.
