DESIGN – The application of the material. A great stone can be ruined by improper usage.  Does the project designer have the requisite experience to suggest the right material for your job? Using polished materials outdoors, or in high-traffic floor areas could have disastrous results. Also, using a material which might stain, etch, leach, or otherwise adversely react to its environment is another area of concern. Have you thought about seams?  Most smaller and inexperienced fabricators will opt for more seams, so they can maximize their material cuts.  In many cases, a smaller fabricator/installer will use remnants from different lots, often running the grain in different directions. The results in either case are unsatisfactory. Also, considering the edge details is equally as important – for example, ogee corners and tight radii are not very friendly to little heads. All of these factors should be addressed by a quality fabricator.

Important note: an experienced stone designer should ask you a myriad of questions and listen to every detail about your project.
