Sandstone
SANDSTONE

This soft stone is known for it’s beautiful earth tones: red, cream, yellow, and brown tones. Because it is soft, the stone is most frequently used for applications where it is carved. Some examples include pillars, architectural elements, and fireplace components.

Even though the stone itself is porous, it weathers very well and is suited for a wide variety of building applications. Sandstone is one of the oldest building materials used by man. Over time, sandstone will eventually become quartzite.

Material note: Sandstone is a quartz-based stone, but the particles are far enough apart that it cannot be easily polished. Sandstone generally is used in its natural cleft state.

Classification: Sedimentary

Examples: Gold and Peach Sandstone
