SLATE

The name slate refers to its “slaty” cleavage, which means that the rock can be split into thin sheets. Because of this, slate has been used a durable roofing material for hundreds of years and many original slate roofs exist in the US and Europe.

Slate generally comes in dark gray, with hues of blue, purple, green, and brown sometimes present. MARBLEX often recommends its usage as a nearly maintenance-free substitute for soapstone.

Material note: Slate’s hardness varies significantly. Softer slates are best used for flooring and non-stressed architectural elements, like a fireplace. MARBLEX stocks Pietra Cardozo, an extremely dense type of slate, suitable for any application.
